We are the masters of our fate, the builders of our destiny. This is the truth that a lot of people avoid at all costs. Complaining, making excuses and blaming others for our misfortune is a result of not being in line with this simple truth.
What is mindset?
According to thefreedictionary.com the definition of mindset is “a habitual or characteristic mental attitude that determines how you will interpret and respond to situations”. Your mindset is formed by your values, your beliefs and your feelings and is the determining factor for success in most cases. Another word for mindset is context. It is your tool of judgement and it’s what ultimately determines your decisions in life. Whenever a thought passes through your mind it is being weighed by your context and your reaction, whether it’s mental or physical, is executed within your context.
Why is mindset important?
Having the correct mindset is one of the key factors when taking up just about anything in life. It means that you are ready to go on and determined to do what it takes. Without the proper mindset we will be just scratching the surface and as soon as we stumble upon any road bump we will be ready to give up.
To really succeed in anything we need to have a passion for it, enthusiasm and strong will. We need to have a clear vision of our goals and a well written plan of action. Nothing comes easy in this life and we certainly cannot be prepared for everything but at least we can try to prepare, do our best and hope for the best outcome.
A few years ago I was just surfing the net reading blogs and out of nowhere something very interesting struck me. I read a theory that seemed to make a lot of sense and the people standing behind it sounded very convincing. It’s called the Law of Attraction and it seems to be very popular nowadays. What it’s saying is that we are the ones creating the circumstances around us and we are responsible for everything that has ever happened to us. In fact, we attracted it consciously or unconsciously and we are the ones to blame if our life doesn’t go the way we want it to. I will not go into any more detail about the Law of Attraction since I have written about it in another post. My point is that everything we accomplish and everything that we fail at is the result of our mindset.
To go even deeper I would say that failure is something that can exist only within our mindset. To me failure is a chance to learn, to improve and to grow. Failure is an opportunity, it’s the only way to get better at anything, it simply means you’ve tried and not succeeded. If you want to win you need to learn how to lose first and how to deal with loosing. Failure should not frustrate you and it should not make you want to quit. Quitting is the only other way to be sure you can’t win apart from not even trying. Failure should be your best friend on your way to success. It should be lighting a fire in your eyes making you practice even harder.
That is why mindset or context is so important. It is the very difference between winning and loosing.
How to develop the right mindset?
There are whole books on the subject but I will try to outline the most important factors in developing a mindset for success. It is something that takes some time and effort but I think it’s well worth it in the end. The only requirement to start-off right is to embrace change and be patient.
Developing your mindset is a matter of opening your mind to more possibilities and believing in yourself. That is easier said than done but there are a ton of resources nowadays that will guide you in your personal development journey.
First of all you need to be clear about you goals, what it is that you want to accomplish. Goal setting is a skill that needs to be developed by each and every one of us if we want to succeed. A clear goal is the first step to any endeavor be it personal, social or financial. You need to be as specific as possible with your goals by quantifying what it is that you want to accomplish and setting a reasonable deadline for it.
Financial goals are pretty easy to quantify in terms of a certain amount of money that you’d like to make in a certain amount of time. When it comes to personal goals this task is not that easily accomplished but it can still be done if we simply rate the skill we would like to improve on the scale of 0 to 10. You should write down your goals and read them every day to make sure you are on track. You should also come up with a plan of action as to how you are going to accomplish your goals. It is also very important to set achievable goals with reasonable deadlines so you don’t get discouraged.
The most easily accessible resource available is books. I have a goal of reading at least one book each month. There are thousands of great books on the topics of personal development and within my posts I will do my best to outline the ones that I find the most helpful and share them with you.
Simply reading however will not do much good unless you put what you’ve learned to practice. Every author suggests or implies some specific actions that you need to take seriously. Nothing in this life comes without some effort especially the things that are really worth it.
No matter what you are planning to do you always have to believe in your abilities. Doubt and fear are the number one enemies of success. Overcoming doubt and fear can be achieved with self confidence and determination. Everyone has experienced failure at some point in their life and I bet nobody likes it, but failure should not be viewed as something bad. In fact through failure we learn the most and every failure is a chance to grow. In stead of dwelling on failure you should concentrate on your strengths and be determined to succeed. The difference between the loser and the champion is that the latter did not give up when he failed.
Think, eat and breathe success and you shall have it.
I appreciate anyone willing to share their opinion and would love to read your comments on the topic.
